Last November my mom turned 72 and I was able to give her the best birthday to date! I blew it OUT! We stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House with a Savannah view, became annual pass holders, had afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian and I think my favorite thing of the week was that we booked the Starlight Safari.
What exactly is the Starlight Safari you ask? It is a special nighttime tour that allows you a guided trip through the Savannah located at Animal Kingdom Lodges. The tour is offered twice nightly, once at 8:30 pm and again at 10 pm. Check-in is at Sanaa 15 minutes before the start of the tour.
We began the tour by climbing onto the open sided off road tour vehicle. Be prepared, although the seats were padded they were still a tad bit hard. But we soon settled in with the blankets and night vision binoculars ready for our trek! Laura, our guide was simply amazing. Our group was small, 12 people including the driver Kristi. This made it feel so much more personal than a large group would have.
Our chariot awaits!
Laura began our tour with a quick overview of what to expect and we were on our way! The very first thing we could see was Kidani Lodge in all it’s nighttime splendor. Then, as we adjusted to the darkness, we could start to make out different animals just along the edges of the lights from the resort. Girraffs, Anakole Cattle, Waterbucks, Wildebeast, Zebras, Gazelles and more. Laura gave us so many facts about each species and explained the intensive work Disney puts fourth to help with the conservation and preservation of each animal. She also explained what it takes to be hired as a care taker to these beautiful creatures. I can tell you that it’s a prestigious position and Disney only accept the best to care for the animals across the parks.

Awww… isn’t she so cute?
The only downside I can share is that the cold weather meant that the animals were not as active as we had hoped and some were in the barns being kept warm with specialized heating units. All in all though we still felt as if we had the full experience and were surprised to receive a commemorative glow in the dark pin as we concluded the tour.
I honestly can’t recommend this tour enough. I can’t wait until we have the opportunity to experience it again…and then maybe again 🙂
