Arriving at Jambo House
It’s day two of our 5 day vacation at Walt Disney World. We arrived yesterday at Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House and dropped our luggage at bell services and headed straight to Magic Kingdom. We had so much fun, so much in fact that we shut it down and didn’t get back to our resort until almost 11pm! Still, I can’t make myself sleep late so it’s 7am and I am the only one awake. I quietly make a cup of coffee and head out on the balcony to enjoy a few moments to myself while I let the family sleep for just a little while longer. After all, we have a full day ahead of us and we have reservations for the Starlight Safari this evening.
As I settle down in my chair on the balcony I see movement out of the corner of my eye. Looking up I can see the distinctive black and white stripes of zebras as they graze on the thick grass around them. I am mesmerised. I don’t want to breathe, because somehow I feel as if I might startle them and they will run away, but then I see a game keeper riding through the trails and the zebra are unfazed. As the game keeper begins to place food strategically through the savannah, I notice the young giraffe pulling leaves from a bundle hanging on a tree ever so close to my room. A GIRAFFE IS ONLY YARDS AWAY FROM MY BALCONY! Why didn’t I grab my camera? I quickly (and quietly) slip in the room and grab it along with a few different lenses. I know I should wake my family but there is just something so special, almost private, watching these creatures in the still early morning light.
I begin taking pictures of the giraffe and the zebra then I notice so much movement on the ground below. Suddenly I see the Impalas, Wildebeast, and a beautiful bird that I later identify as an East African Crowned Crane. Here I am, in Florida, at a theme park, surrounded by 1000’s of other guests, and I feel as if I could be the only person in the world with these animals.
It’s almost 8am and I know I need to wake the family so we can grab a bite to eat and head out to make those Fastpasses this morning. I hate that I have to break the spell. Nonetheless, I head inside and everyone starts to stir. I tell them about the animals and they all make their way to the balcony for a few moments of ohhhs and ahhhhs before heading in to get ready.
As I wait for my family to finish their breakfast I grab the daily resort schedule. I had no idea how many activities were offered! Why didn’t I schedule a resort day during this trip? Why didn’t I do more research on everything that is offered throughout the day?
Don’t get me wrong…our week was amazing! We rode our favorite rides, ate our must-have snacks, and had the most amazing dinners at several of the restaurants, but still, I wanted to spend more time at Jambo. We did enjoy the Starlight Safari and I promise to tell you all about it in a later post. As we checked on our last day we made the decision that on our next stay at Animal Kingdom’s Jambo House we will take the time to enjoy our surroundings. In fact, we will be doing so in November of this year! I can’t wait to tell you all about it!
